HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT

School of Nursing is a pioneer school in the training of medical specialists. On the 15th of November, 1929, the School of Nurse was established by The Ministry of Health based on the State Central Hospital of Ulaanbaatar. 20 students were enrolled and planned to train for 2 years.

On the 1st of August, 1931, the School of Nurse and the course for Nursing based on the Military Hospital were merged and established a Human Medical College according to the Government resolution №17.

In 1931, qualified graduates of the Human Medical College were trained as a medical assistant for 6 months. The College began formally to train midwives in 1937, dental technicians in 1938, hospital laboratory technicians and pharmacists in 1941.

From 1960 Professional Development course was established based on the Human Medical College. In 1961 it was expanded from the Human Medical College to a School of Medical Sciences and started to train radiologists in the same year and hygienists and assistant doctors in 1963.

In 1967, the School of Nurses was organized as a Branch School and in 1969 it was awarded as a “Order of the Red Banner of Labor” according to the Resolution №247 of the Leaders of the National People’s Congress of the People’s Republic of Mongolia.

In 1969, nursing teacher class was opened and it became a Special Vocational School for Nurses whose students graduated with diploma that meets the international standards.

From the 1st of September, 1985, the Secondary School for Nurses was independently operated according to the Order №19 of the State Committee for high and vocational Education.

Nurses with bachelor degree and treatment-nursing methodologists were trained from 1993. The College of Medical Sciences was affiliated from the University of Medical Sciences in 1997. The School of Nursing was established, a branch School of the University of Health Sciences.

The School of Nursing has been transformed into the School of Health Technology in order to train not only nurses but also medical technicians who will work in the health sector.

On the 20th of December, 2012, the School was accredited by The Accreditation Commission of the West Coast of the Asia Pacific Region. In 2013, the School of Health Technology was reorganized into the School of Nursing. In 2010, it became the standard school in the field of health care in Mongolia and from 2014 the School began to train professionals as an occupational therapists and medical equipment installation technicians.

On the 8th of September, 2016, the International Quality Management System ISO 9001:2015 was implemented for the first time in Mongolian Education sector and the School of Nursing determined its vision, mission, policy of quality, and motto according to the standards.

In 2020, model programs for online and blended learning of the School of Nursing were introduced and it worked hard to create good conditions for training open, qualified and flexible medical specialists within the framework of Government policy to increase the number of nurses.

In 2021, the master’s and doctorate degree training programs for midwives, occupational therapists and physical therapists were developed and the first students were enrolled. The learning environment and outdoor area of the school has been improved. Students’ development programs were approved and implemented in the School.

The book “A Century of Nursing” was written dedicated for the 100th Anniversary of the People’s Revolution, 100th Anniversary of the Scientific Organization, and 100th Anniversary of the Health Protection System in Mongolia. It is included the chain of the history, the policies and development of the sector, training and research of the nursing and it is supposed to be that a new page of the history of Modern Nursing has been opened.

Bachelor and associated degree of nursing and occupational therapists’ curricula were accredited, in which means all of the curricula of the School of Nursing were accredited. The school has been trying to create a student-friendly learning environment and implement the Teacher Development sub-programs for its stakeholders.

The School of Nursing at MNUMS (Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences) had its Bachelor's program in Nursing evaluated by Germany's ASIIN International Accreditation Agency in 2023. Since it met the required standards, the program has been accredited until 2029.

In 2024, the School of Nursing will celebrate its 95th anniversary. To honor this milestone, our school has planned and is organizing significant events throughout the year, including an international academic conference, program accreditation, a health sector sports festival, scholarship programs, the creation of a historical book about the school, programs and school introduction brochure, and new textbooks.
